Neighborhood Produce in Winter Hill, Somerville, MA
By Maggie Dee Spencer
Neighborhood Produce is a community grocery store in the Winter Hill neighborhood of Somerville. It is the realization of owner Matt Grey's grand vision to create increased accessibility to healthy food within the community. He began by hosting pop up markets in the parking lot of nearby Winter Hill Brewing Company to bring fresh produce to the neighborhood. The community responded enthusiastically by funding nearly 75% of his Kickstarter campaign, which enabled Neighborhood Produce to open a brick and mortar location on Medford Street in November 2017.
Neighborhood Produce's selection of items is curated specifically for the neighborhood patrons they serve. The shelves are thoughtfully stocked with fresh produce, bulk items, and specialty products -- all with an emphasis on local sources and minimal waste. An assortment of produce "as nature intended" provides affordably priced items that would otherwise be discarded and deemed cosmetically unacceptable by larger grocery stores. Davis Square Donuts & Bagels, Somerville Bread Company, and Common Ground Coffee Roasters are just a few of the local and beloved suppliers.
Whether you're gathering items for a healthy meal, or a bagel and coffee for breakfast on the run, Neighborhood Produce is a steady pulse in the neighborhood, connecting fresh and local food to the Winter Hill community.
